Communities on Foot

Walkability adds strength and enjoyment to the fabric of community life. While out walking, we meet our neighbours, get some exercise, visit local shops, and enjoy public spaces. We also become the 'eyes on the street' that enhance safety and reduce crime.

As you know COCL is a very large community and there are a number of walking trails, lakes and green spaces but, we do not all know where they are or how to get there from our neighborhoods. We want to provide information about where the trails are located and their entry points, what they link to (business, lake, school, or playground) and how many minutes it will take to walk or bike there. Our hope is to provide information and maps so you and your family can get out and enjoy your community.

The Community League will be working with the City of Edmonton to create these Community Walking Maps and in order to do so we need your help. If you are interested in working on the Community Walking Map project please email the president or leave a phone message at 780-478-1957 with your name, phone number and email address.

Taking Pawsitive Steps

Please be a considerate and responsible pet owner when walking your dogs. Dogs are only allowed to be off-leash within the boundaries of designated off-leash areas. Beyond your yard, please make sure you keep your dog on a leash. You can walk your dog on-leash along any trail on parkland, city boulevards, or area that is signed on-leash.

According to City of Edmonton by-laws, dogs are not permitted on school grounds, playgrounds, sports fields or picnic sites.

The City of Edmonton maintains a full listing of off-leash dog parks on their website. Off-leash parks around our community league boundaries include Orval Allen Park and Berm (grassy berm east of 127 St from 153 to 167 Ave, including Orval Allen Park) and Caernarvon (south boulevard on 153 Ave from 126 St to Castle Downs Road).

COCL President has his eye on surplus school sites

For about 15 years, Jean Deslauriers has watched the weeds grow on the field across the street, where a school was supposed to be built. There are two other empty fields like it in Castle Downs, he says, and most people know by now there won’t be schools on them. That’s been disappointing for families who bought homes assuming they’d be close to a school, says Deslauriers, president of the Cumberland Oxford community league. But if the field can’t be home to a school, Deslauriers has another idea.
